Jo is an accomplished dance theatre artist who was born profoundly deaf. She was first introduced to dance training in 1999 by Company Chaos in Australia. In 2001 Jo returned to the UK where she was awarded a scholarship for the Professional Diploma in Community Dance Studies at the Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. Here, she continued her studies into gaining a Masters with distinction with in European Dance Theatre Practice, where she was awarded a commendation from City University London for accomplished work. Since 2004 she has performed and trained with several independent dance artists and companies across UK and Europe such as Jemima Hoadly’s Wreckless Arts, GreenCandle, Andy Hamer and Splindrift theatre.
Since arriving back in Australia in 2009, she has performed with Restless Dance Theatre’s award winning ‘Bedroom Dancing’, with Strange Fruit ‘ The 3 Belles’ at the Australian Deaf Games and Gaelle Mellis in her innovative and award winning production “Take up thy bed and Walk’. She was invited to choreograph “Resonance: The first time I met you, I…’” with Arts Access Victoria for the 4th world congress in Mental health and Deafness in Brisbane, 2009 as well to lead dance workshops for the deaf community. She went on to direct and co-choreograph ‘Collisions’ with Jodie Farrugia in 2012, a new work which brought hearing and Deaf dancers together in Australia for the first time. This lead to founding The Delta Project at Arts Access Victoria; Australia’s first company of Deaf and hearing performers and co-directed their last show ‘Under my Skin’ with Lina Limosani, which premiered at Next Wave 2016. She is based in Melbourne as an independent artist and advocate and is passionate about all things diverse and experimental.
