Workshop opportunity for Young People

Workshop Expression of Interest: ‘A Resourceful Hero Struggling Against Incredible Odds’

Rawcus warmly invites young people aged 13 25 to participate in a creative development workshop for a new work entitled ‘A Resourceful Hero Struggling Against Incredible Odds’.

We encourage young disabled and non-disabled people who identify as LGBTQI+ or as allies to submit an Expression of Interest.

This new work is being developed by artists Katrina Cornwell and Morgan Rose in collaboration with the Rawcus Ensemble, as part of the Midsumma Festival 2021.

Project Description

‘A Resourceful Hero Struggling Against Incredible Odds’ is an immersive gallery experience that uses verbatim scripts from your favourite action movies (you know the ones; Avengers, X-Men, The Bourne Identity, Speed 1 & 2) and attempts to recreate them with the Rawcus Ensemble and young, LGBTQI+ performers with and without a disability.

The work examines our collective obsession with heroes, superheros and supervillains, as performers try to embody the strength, cunning, unique abilities and ridiculous outfits of these worlds. Playing with the performativity of the hero, the work questions who we accept as a hero, especially when they don’t look like Keanu Reeves, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlet Johannsson or Angelina Jolie. In the gap between our ordinary world and the extra-ordinary world of the big screen we find the humour, humility and power of the everyday.

The Workshop

This oneday workshop will experiment with how we embody the text of action movies and how we think about the idea of ‘hero’ in both movies and our everyday lives. The workshop will culminate in a photoshoot with acclaimed photographer Sarah Walker.
